Uninstalling Norton or other existing anti-virus software

It is essential that you first uninstall all existing anti-virus applications from your computer, including Norton, before you install McAfee VirusScan Enterprise edition, which is required for ALL Windows computers at BC.

Why you should ditch Norton AntiVirus

Every year, I take a look at the latest crop of antivirus software. Usually, the new versions of these programs are just the same software packages in a new box with the current year on it. This year, however, I saw a demo for an application that had me running home to install it and raving about it to friends and family. Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security 12 (2005) is the best antivirus software package I've seen in a long while. Give it a try; I think you'll agree.

McAfee VirusScan 2006

In tests for "The New Virus Fighters," McAfee VirusScan 2006 ranked second overall among the ten products in the group because it performed consistently well without bombing in any particular category. It ranked fourth in overall performance, doing particularly well in our heuristics tests. Here, it ranked second, behind Best Buy winner BitDefender. It ranked third in our scan-speed testing and sixth in detecting the malware in our zoo collection of backdoor programs, bots, and Trojan horses.

Kaspersky Lab Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 5

In "The New Virus Fighters", Kaspersky was the only product among the ten we tested to detect our zoo collection's backdoor programs, bots, and Trojan horses better than 99 percent of the time. And it was the quickest company at responding to new security threats. For the period of eight months in 2005 that we tested, Kaspersky Labs released new signature updates less than 2 hours after it detected a major security threat, on average. Kaspersky ranked fourth in our heuristics tests.

Symantec System Center manages all your antivirus software

If your antivirus software has outdated signature files, then it's completely worthless because new viruses will pass right by it. When you have a network with dozens or hundreds of workstations, keeping up with all of the virus signature files across your network can be a full-time job. Symantec has released the Symantec System Center (SSC) to help deal with this management nightmare.

Symantec AntiVirus Corp 9

I google'd this and couldn't come up with anything concrete. My company is currently running Symantec Antivirus Corp ed. 9. Well we're opening another site and need to purchase additional licenses. What I want to know is if Symantec is still supporting version 9 or will they stop supporting it soon.

Norton AntiVirus 2005

In fact, Norton has been coasting on old code for several years, simply dressing it up with an occasional new feature here and there. This year, Norton AntiVirus 2005 adds a limited firewall designed to block incoming worm code. I say, why not give us a full firewall instead? No, for that, you'll need to cough up another £44.99 for Norton Personal Firewall or go whole hog and get the £59.99 Norton Internet Security suite. Norton AntiVirus 2005 produces a perceptible resource drain -- you'd think they'd have fixed that by now. Worse, in order to completely remove Norton AntiVirus from your PC, you'll need to download a free tool from Symantec (follow the links in the 'Norton AntiVirus installed as a stand-alone product' section of the page).
