Working with Norton AV

Symantec's Norton AntiVirus software can be a powerful tool to help you protect yourself and your agency from malicious code. As with any utility, though, it pays to make thoughtful decisions about how you use it -- and to know how to disable it. The guidelines in this section should help you use Norton AntiVirus effectively.

Here are a few things to think about - and hopefully act on - before you begin your antivirus installation:

  1. Before installing any software to your system remember to back your data files.
  2. Two virus softwares on your computer are not better than one. They actually can cancel each other out. Uninstall any other antivirus software, including old NAV, unless you are only doing an update.
  3. You should set up your system for live auto updatem especially if you are on a broadband network. At the very least, it will be a reminder that should happen weekly, not monthly, for you to update your systems. It takes minutes.
  4. Norton automatically scans your attachments and any disk drives. Go to OPTIONS, under Internet, select Email and check the first box. (We do not recommend checking out-going mail.)
  5. Keep Auto-Protect turned on (enabled) at all times to prevent viruses from infecting your computer. Auto-Protect works in the background, without interrupting your work. Auto-Protect automatically:
    • Detects and protects you against all types of viruses, including macro viruses, boot sector viruses, memory resident viruses and Trojan horses, worms and other malicious code.
    • Protects your computer from viruses transmitted through the Internet, checking all files you download from the Internet, including Java Applets and ActiveX controls.
    • Keeps your system safe at all times by checking for viruses every time you use software programs on your computer, insert floppy disks or other removable media, and modify or access documents.
    • Monitors your computer for any unusual symptoms that may indicate an active virus.
