Usually annoying rather than devastating, a macro virus can pose a significant threat to a college campus. Viruses, easily transferred through shared floppy disks in a computer lab, have the effect of decreasing student productivity.

With more than 100,000 students, faculty, and staff on eight campuses, Indiana University (IU) kept its myriad of workstations and servers outfitted with antivirus software. In late 1998, however, IU's Bloomington campus suffered a macro virus attack; the existing antivirus software was powerless. Coincidentally, the attack occurred while IU was evaluating a number of antivirus products, narrowing its focus to one: Symantec's Norton AntiVirus.

When Mark Bruhn, university Information Technology policy officer, loaded Norton AntiVirus on his system, he instantly discovering 13 infected documents. "Other antivirus software we had been using throughout the university had not even detected those viruses," he says.

Brian Voss, director of teaching and learning, Information Technology, says that Norton AntiVirus detected and repaired 38 infected documents on his PC. "When our executive staff--which regularly shares e-mail documents--loaded Norton AntiVirus on their PCs, more than 200 infected documents were found," he says.

The product's high detection and repair rate were key in IU's choice. AutoProtect works continuously to protect a user's workstation. Bloodhound detects even unknown viruses. And Live Update gets the latest virus definitions and an updated virus-scanning engine with the click of a mouse. Norton System Center, a plug-in for Microsoft Management Console, enables administrators to deploy, configure, monitor, and update antivirus from a central point. And Norton Ghost facilitates and simplifies product installation and upgrades.

"Norton AntiVirus offered the scalability the university requires," Voss says. "Our previous antivirus software was limited to Windows only, whereas Norton AntiVirus offers coverage across several platforms."
